Review from GELCO customer for Boilers and Plumbing

What is the difference between Central air and a Ductless Split system?

Central Air Conditioning is one of the best ways to get relief from our hot summers is to install central air conditioning in your home. Energy efficient and convenient, it’s our biggest seller in the spring and summer. Unlike window A/C units, which only cool one area or room, central air conditioning cools your entire home from one central location. The units are mainly combined with your furnace system so you are able to use the same venting.

Ductless Split System. A ductless system consists of one or more indoor unit and one outdoor (condenser) unit. The indoor unit will distribute cool air to one area or room, and is often wall mounted, with no duct work required. A condenser unit is capable of handling up to 5 indoor units. It functions the same way as a central air conditioner, but only requires a hole in the wall for the wiring and refrigerant line. They are fairly easy to install and although initially cost more to install than central air, they are generally more energy efficient.

Air Conditioning Terms. A Condenser Unit is the unit that sits outside your home. The heat from inside the home gets removed through the condenser unit out the side or the top of the unit. You must keep the unit from getting blocked and keep the air flow moving. It’s best to have the unit mounted on a bracket on the outside wall of the home, if possible. This keeps the unit up and out of the snow in winter. This is also especially important if the home is new and the ground is still settling. With professional installation, noise from the unit will be minimal. What does SEER mean and why is it important? SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio and the rating measures how energy efficient an air conditioning unit is. The higher the SEER number, the more efficient it is and the more you save on your utility bills. The higher the SEER number, the more expensive the unit becomes. Also important to note; houses built after 2014 must be equal to 16 SEER or higher. What is a Ton? A ton measures the cooling capability of the condenser unit. In other words, the amount of heat the air conditioner can remove from the home in an hour.

Frequently asked questions

Most frequent questions and answers

How much noise does an air conditioner make?

The lower the decibal rating, the lower the sound the air conditioner will make. Different brands are louder than others, be sure to consider this rating before making your decision and choose the one that will meet your needs.

Is there a warranty on Air Conditioners?

Most brands offer a 10 year warranty on their products. We would be happy to send you more information on a specific brand to help you make your decision.

How often does my air conditioner filter need to be changed?

Depending on the type of unit you have installed in your home, you may have one filter that is used for both furnace and air conditioner or you may require individual filters. We recommend changing filters once a month. This is a very important component in the performance of the unit and it often get’s overlooked. Changing the filter once a month will not only extend the life of your system, it will ensure the air flow is unrestricted which in turnwill help save money on your energy bill.
